Water Pressure

Water Pressure Problems

Having water pressure problems? These can be caused by low and high pressure in your water lines. Both can be a cause of water pipe damage, water wastage and water leaks which all can result in expensive damage to your home, commercial building or strata building.

Understanding Water Pressure

City Delivery of Water

The water provided by your city through their water line pipes is delivered to your home or building at a higher water pressure than what you require inside your home or building. The high pressure served by the city is reduced before entering your home with a water pressure regulator.

During high demand the city can only keep up the delivery of water to you as best it can. A high demand of water in your area can be a cause of low water pressure within your home or business.

On your property low water pressure can be caused by a problem with the water line between the city connection and the water line on your property delivering water to your system.

Water Pressure Within Your Home or Building

Within your home or building the water travels through various piping and devices to reach its destination like your faucet or shower head. Any leaks, failed connections or faulty devices and water lines along the water’s path can cause low water pressure.

Any sudden stopping of water through a disaster, city work or work you are having done then sudden turning on of the water can cause a surge of water pressure and make leaks, failure of valves and devices to show up.

Symptoms of Water Pressure Problems

If you suspect you have a water pressure issue have you noticed any of these symptoms?

  • Leaking from Fixtures or Piping

Noticed visible leaks at joints in your piping.

  • Intermittent Leaking

Noticed intermittent leaking from piping or fixtures.

  • No Water Pressure at Sink or Tub

Noticed when washing dishes in the kitchen sink, taking a shower not enough water coming out of the shower head or the bath tub takes ages to fill.

Low Water Pressure Causes

Here are some of the causes of low water pressure with your home or building:

  • The city water delivery system has a problem.

Ask your neighbours if they also are suffering with a low water pressure issue. Remember, as mentioned above, a high demand in your area could be the cause of low water pressure.

  • Your water pressure reducing valve is failing.

Check the gauge on your pressure reducing valve is still working properly.

Is your water pressure regulator leaking?

  • Main city shut off value not open all the way.

If you or the city turned off your city water supply for some reason perhaps the supply valve was not fully open when water service was restored.

  • Leak in your water main.

A leak in the water main feeding your home or building water from the city could have a leak. Have you noticed any leaks in the basement, garage or through the foundation walls? How about outside, is the ground in the yard wet even though there has not been any rain?

  • Screen in your faucet clogged.

The screen (aerator) at the end of your faucet where the water comes out can become clogged with corrosion and bits in the water line.

  • Low pressure just when hot water run.

Low water pressure just when the hot water is turned on means there is a problem with your hot water heater/tank.

  • Toilet constantly running.

Is there a toilet constantly running somewhere?

  • Sprinkler system leaking.

If you have a sprinkler system in place, have you checked to see if one of the sprinkler heads or lines is leaking?

  • Old piping.

Old piping can be a cause of low water pressure. Over time pipes (especially galvanized ones) get a building up in them, thus reducing water flow/water pressure.

  • Fixture failure

Possibly your fixture delivering water to your sink, shower or tub and failed internally.
